Add Battery to Existing Solar in Swansea

Swansea is full of FiT-era solar. Thousands of South Wales homes fitted panels between 2011 and 2016 and have run solar-only ever since, exporting surplus by day and buying it back at a far higher rate each evening. Adding a GivEnergy battery captures that surplus for evening use instead. Whether you're on a terrace in Uplands, a semi in Sketty, or out towards Mumbles and the Gower, our Cardiff-based engineer covers Swansea — about 40 minutes west on the M4 — with a free same-day remote diagnostic and an on-site survey within the next working day or two.

Massively massively recommended. We had a big battery array (49kW across three phases) put in four years ago. c £35k cost. It’s been a total nightmare for many reasons, not least 1. our installer being totally useless and unresponsive and 2. Givenergy, our battery supplier, going bust. Long story short it had never worked anywhere near properly despite countless hours on phones and emails; the best we’d achieved was one third of the batteries working. Rather than write it off, I asked a PM friend to try to source someone who could come on site and review and revive the system. He found Solar Tech Support and Ron. Ron assured us he was the man to get it going again. After so many years of pain, I was not convinced but, true to his word, five hours later it was up and running. Lovely chap, super knowledgeable with a support team to lean on who are also clearly super technical. I honestly didn’t think there was much chance of getting this array going ever again so was absolutely delighted when Ron and team pulled it off. Bravo!

Fantastic service, I would highly recommend. From first contact my solar issue was resolved within 2 days. Wouldn't use anyone else.

Jackie Howell · Jul 2026 Google

I've spoken to Ron a couple of times with issues with my Givenergy installation. Such a friendly knowledge guy very highly recommended. Thank you very much for resolving my issues

michael fairhurst · May 2026

A really big thank you to Ron and his team, he has vast amounts of knowledge and got my system back up and running, also good to get on with. I was absolutely lost as to know what to do, no help from installer and somehow came across Ron and am I glad I did. I would definitely definitely recommend him to anyone who has faults with there solar system, any make I would say. Thanks again Ron a pleasure meeting you.

D R · Jun 2026 Google

Ron made more sense in 20 mins than our installer has done over the last 12 months There is a jungle out there and you need someone like Ron to give a comprehensive overview and solution

David · May 2026

Thank you for your diligence. On this occasion the battery was able to be saved but they have given a route to hopefully arrange a repair from the manufacturer.

Swansea context

Swansea is full of FiT-era solar with no battery — and we cover it from Cardiff

South Wales took up the Feed-in Tariff in big numbers between 2011 and 2016, and most of those Swansea systems are still solar-only a decade later. They generate happily through the day, export the surplus for pennies, then buy it back at a much higher rate every evening. A battery closes that gap. Our engineer is based in Cardiff and covers Swansea — about 40 minutes west on the M4 — so we start with a free remote diagnostic the same day you get in touch, then book an on-site survey within the next working day or two.

GivEnergy

Our most-installed retrofit battery in South Wales — pairs with any existing inverter brand

Some of those early Swansea systems were fitted by installers that have since closed — Consumer Energy Solutions Ltd, a Swansea ECO4 installer, entered administration in January 2026, and other South Wales firms have gone the same way. If yours was one of them, the panels are almost certainly still generating but may never have been upgraded. Adding a battery is straightforward: we identify the existing hardware, recover monitoring access, verify FiT registration, and retrofit a GivEnergy battery in a single process. No original documentation needed.

Brand compatibility

How a GivEnergy battery retrofit works with your specific inverter

Every inverter brand integrates with storage a little differently. Here's what the retrofit looks like for the brands most common across Swansea — with GivEnergy as the battery in almost every case.

Already have GivEnergy? Expand your storage — Sketty, Killay, Gowerton

GivEnergy is the dominant battery in Swansea retrofits. If you already have a GivEnergy AIO or hybrid and want more capacity, we add a slave or expansion battery to your existing stack — no new inverter needed. If your GivEnergy system isn't performing as expected, we diagnose and reconfigure remotely before recommending any new hardware. GivEnergy support → · add an expansion battery →

SolarEdge with optimisers — Mumbles, Bishopston, Pennard

SolarEdge systems use DC optimisers on each panel with a central inverter. AC-coupling a GivEnergy battery alongside SolarEdge is straightforward — the battery inverter connects to the consumer unit independently. SolarEdge's own StorEdge interface exists but needs a compatible SolarEdge inverter. For most Swansea homes, an independent AC-coupled GivEnergy battery is cheaper and more flexible than the StorEdge route, and your panel-level optimisation continues unchanged.

Enphase microinverters — premium installs across SA postcodes

Enphase converts DC to AC at each panel, so there's no central string inverter. That means DC coupling isn't an option — AC coupling is the only route, which is actually ideal. You add a GivEnergy battery inverter to the consumer unit, the CT clamp monitors total consumption, and the battery charges from surplus Enphase output. Enphase's own IQ battery exists but costs significantly more than a third-party AC-coupled alternative. We install both — your choice.

Fronius & Solis string inverters — FiT-era systems across Swansea

The most straightforward retrofit. Fronius IG, Primo, and Solis string inverters are simple solar-only units — AC-coupling a GivEnergy battery alongside them needs no changes to the existing system at all. If the Fronius or Solis is approaching end of life (10+ years), consider combining the inverter replacement with a DC-coupled battery in one visit — saves a second installation and often works out cheaper than two separate jobs.

Coupling options

AC or DC coupling? The right answer depends on your inverter

For most Swansea systems — the solar-only FiT-era arrays on terraces across Uplands, Brynmill and Townhill — AC coupling is the better option. DC coupling makes sense when an older inverter is already failing and due for replacement anyway.

AC Coupling — the right choice for most
Works with every existing inverter — SolarEdge, Enphase, Fronius, Solis, all of them
Your current solar setup stays exactly as it is — zero disruption
Single-day GivEnergy install, no scaffolding, no roof work
From £2,995 for a first battery — capacity confirmed in your quote
DC Coupling — when your inverter needs replacing anyway
Combines inverter replacement and battery in one visit — saves installation cost
Higher round-trip efficiency — solar charges the battery on the DC bus
Not compatible with SolarEdge optimiser or Enphase microinverter architectures
From £3,495 for the battery fit, plus the hybrid inverter — quoted by capacity

Swansea-specific recommendation: If you have a SolarEdge or Enphase system, AC coupling is the only practical route — and a GivEnergy battery does the job perfectly. If you have a healthy Fronius or Solis, AC coupling is cheaper. If that Fronius or Solis is showing its age, DC coupling lets you swap the inverter and add a battery in one go. A free remote diagnostic tells you exactly where you stand — same day, before we drive over. Full technical comparison →

Battery options

Battery systems we install across Swansea

Swansea's housing runs from tight terraces in Uplands, Brynmill and St Thomas to larger semis in Sketty, Killay and out towards Mumbles. A 4.8 kWh GivEnergy AIO suits a 2–3 kW terrace; a larger stack makes sense for a bigger system running Octopus Flux. We recommend on your system, usage and space — not on commission.

GivEnergy All-in-One

The most popular battery retrofit in Swansea by a wide margin. 4.8 kWh or 9.5 kWh in a single wall-mounted unit. Pairs with any existing inverter brand and expands with extra battery modules later. Optional EPS backup available. GivEnergy support →

Growatt SPH + ARK

Modular battery stack that scales from around 5 kWh upward. A strong choice for larger Swansea properties with bigger systems and high evening consumption. Works in both AC and DC coupling, with reliable firmware and a clean monitoring interface.

SolaX Hybrid + T-BAT

Compact and quiet — fits well in the under-stairs cupboards and small utility spaces common in Swansea's older terraced housing across Brynmill and Morriston. Solid app-based monitoring, and good value in the smaller-capacity range.

Sunsynk / Fox ESS / Lux Power

All offer AC and DC coupling with built-in EPS capability. Popular on full new-build installs across Swansea and the Gower. Brand choice often comes down to monitoring-platform preference and consumer-unit layout. We install and commission all three.

Installer gone bust?

Swansea installer closed down? Add a battery and we'll recover the whole system

Swansea solar firms have closed in recent years — Consumer Energy Solutions Ltd, a Swansea ECO4 installer, entered administration in January 2026, and other South Wales companies have gone the same way. If your installer is gone, your panels are almost certainly still generating, but you may have no monitoring, no documentation, and no one to call. We combine a battery retrofit with full system recovery in a single engagement: identify the hardware, recover monitoring, verify warranties, fit a GivEnergy battery, and leave you with a fully documented, actively managed system.

FAQ

Adding a battery in Swansea — common questions

A GivEnergy AC-coupled battery retrofit in Swansea starts at £2,995 for a first-battery install — a GivEnergy All-in-One or equivalent, fully installed and commissioned with DNO paperwork handled. The final figure depends on capacity (4.8 kWh vs 9.5 kWh) and any consumer-unit work; your written quote confirms it. DC-coupled installs — where we replace your existing inverter with a hybrid model and add storage together — start from £3,495 for the battery fit, with the hybrid inverter quoted separately. Swansea is served from our Cardiff base, so we start with a free remote diagnostic the same day to confirm the right option.
Yes. Both SolarEdge and Enphase are fully compatible with AC-coupled battery storage. The battery inverter — typically a GivEnergy unit — sits alongside your existing SolarEdge or Enphase setup and they operate independently. Your panel-level optimisation or microinverter architecture stays exactly as it is. The key consideration is CT clamp placement: the battery needs to read total household consumption accurately, so we verify this before leaving site. Many of Swansea's older terraces in Uplands, Brynmill and St Thomas have tight consumer-unit cupboards, which we plan around during the survey. Full battery guide →
Yes. Swansea installers have closed in recent years — Consumer Energy Solutions Ltd, a Swansea ECO4 installer, entered administration in January 2026 — but the systems themselves keep generating and remain fully eligible for retrofit. We identify the existing inverter, verify string configuration, recover monitoring access, and add a GivEnergy battery alongside the existing setup.
