My GivEnergy solar and battery system is failing intermittently, GivEnergy is in administration and so is my installer, so it was a relief to get Ron’s expert advice.

Steve Trossell · Jun 2026 Google

Ron responded very promptly regarding my GivEnergy battery issue, his knowledgeable diagnosis was spot on and resolved the issue on first attempt. Would recommend to any and all.

Simon Hill · May 2026

Contacted Ron with a problem and he sorted it out quickly with no problems at all. Very knowledgeable on anything solar/ batteries. I would recommend him to anyone

Phill · May 2026

I have a GivEnergy system consisting of two batteries, two inverters and a controlling EMS (Energy Management System) which has not worked since Nov 2025. After six months I discovered Solar Tech Support, reached out to them and Ron phoned me back – how often do you get that service? Could not be more helpful – worked directly with me over the phone, outside what I would call normal working hours. Lucid explanations and we were able to discuss the issues and history using camera and email history. As this was a very rare setup, Ron was able to access an EMS expert in the field to confirm the solution. One sunny day in, I am now only paying for standing charge and a few pence for spikes in grid consumption while battery catches up with house demand.

Ian · May 2026

My 90-year-old father-in-law had a solar system installed nearly three years ago that never worked properly and kept tripping out. Neither the original installer nor GivEnergy could resolve the issues, and we were even pushed towards replacing the system entirely when GivEnergy went bust. I contacted Ron at Solar Tech Support via WhatsApp, and within a few hours he had diagnosed multiple faults — including incorrect wiring that posed a potential fire risk. He carried out a home visit in Nottingham for £295 (including parts), fixed everything, completed firmware updates, and ensured the system was fully operational. Since then, it has worked perfectly. Ron was knowledgeable, responsive, and took the time to explain everything clearly. Highly recommended — excellent value and complete peace of mind.

Julian F · Jun 2026 Google

I work for a Solar Company and had a customer with a GivEnergy system that we are not versed in. Ron took the time to explain the issues my customer was having and between us managed to rectify the issues. 10 Stars ... Thanks again STS

Overview

DC-coupled hybrid — three single-phase models, two architectures

The Gen 3 hybrid is a DC-coupled inverter that connects solar PV strings directly to its MPPT inputs and integrates a battery interface in the same chassis. Three models in the range, all single-phase per the datasheets. The 3.6 and 5.0kW are LV machines (battery voltage 45–58V, RS485 comms) — they pair with GivBat 51.2V LV modules. The 8.0kW is a fundamentally different machine: HV-only (battery voltage 120–510V, CAN interface) — it pairs with the pre-built HV stackable kits. All three have in-built WiFi and LAN per datasheet. There is no external dongle and no "GivHub" product on the Gen 3 side.

LV path — 3.6 and 5.0 kW

· Battery voltage range 45–58V (51.2V nominal)
· RS485 to GivBat with dip-switch master/slave addressing

Gen 3 5.0 kW — LV most-installed

GIV-HY-5.0 — Gen 3 5.0 kW hybrid (LV)

The mid-range single-phase LV hybrid — the most-installed Gen 3 model. 5kW output, G99 certified, same chassis as the 3.6, same LV battery interface, same in-built connectivity.

Key specifications (datasheet)

SKUGIV-HY-5.0
Nominal AC output5,000W (5.0kW)
Max PV voltage580V
DC per string7.5kW (2 trackers / 1 string each)
EPS backup3,600W on the backup terminal
Battery interfaceRS485 (LV, 45–58V)

When to choose the 5.0

· Average UK household with up to 7.5kWp PV
· EV ownership or growing electricity demand
· You want LV expansion path (up to 5 GivBat 9.5 = 47.5kWh)
· G99 prior-approval is acceptable (your installer handles it)
· Same chassis size as the 3.6 — same wall footprint

Best fit: the typical UK three to four-bedroom household. The 5.0 is the most-installed single-phase hybrid for a reason — output ceiling matches typical evening peak, EV smart-charging cohabits cleanly, and LV expansion lets you start with one GivBat and add more later.

Gen 3 8.0 kW — HV flagship

GIV-HY-8.0 — Gen 3 8.0 kW hybrid (HV-only)

The flagship Gen 3 single-phase hybrid, and a fundamentally different machine from the 3.6 and 5.0. Important — HV battery only. The 8.0 Gen 3 pairs with pre-built HV stackable kits per UKDatasheetStackableBatteriesv2.pdf: GIV-BAT-10.2-HV (3 packs, 230VDC, 10.2kWh), GIV-BAT-13.6-HV (4 packs, 307VDC, 13.6kWh), GIV-BAT-17.0-HV (5 packs, 384VDC, 17kWh) or GIV-BAT-20.4-HV (6 packs, 460VDC, 20.4kWh). It does not accept LV GivBat modules.

Battery pairing — by model

Which battery pairs with which Gen 3

Battery pairing is determined by the inverter's battery interface — RS485 + 45–58V on the 3.6/5.0, CAN + 120–510V on the 8.0. Wires of the right type, dip switches set correctly on LV, and HV-kit configuration handled at install. Maximum LV stack size is 5 per the Gen 3 datasheets ("Parallel Capability: Up to 5"). Note: the inverter ceiling still applies — a 3.6kW unit with 5 × 9.5kWh batteries still charges/discharges at 3.6kW max.

3.6 and 5.0 (LV) — battery options

· GivBat 5.12 Gen 3 (5.12kWh, 100% DoD)
· GivBat 9.5 Gen 3 (9.5kWh, 100% DoD, unlimited cycles)
· GivBat 9.5 Gen 2 (legacy, RS485)
· GivBat 8.2 / 5.2 / 2.6 Gen 1 (older, with Gen 3 master + DC isolator)
· Max 5 in parallel — 47.5kWh max LV stack

8.0 (HV) — battery options

· GIV-BAT-10.2-HV (3 × 3.4kWh packs, 10.2kWh, 230VDC)
· GIV-BAT-13.6-HV (4 packs, 13.6kWh, 307VDC)
· GIV-BAT-17.0-HV (5 packs, 17.0kWh, 384VDC)
· GIV-BAT-20.4-HV (6 packs, 20.4kWh, 460VDC)
· LV GivBats are NOT compatible with the 8.0

See the dedicated batteries page for the full LV/HV breakdown, RS485 dip-switch addressing (Master 0,0,0,0 ; Slaves 1,0,0,0…), and operating temperatures.

FAQ

GivEnergy Gen 3 Hybrid questions

All three are single-phase per their datasheets. The 3.6 and 5.0 are LV inverters (battery voltage range 45–58V, RS485 comms) — they pair with LV GivBats (51.2V nominal). Both have 580V max PV voltage, 7.5kW max DC input per string, and 3.6kW EPS backup output. The 8.0 Gen 3 is a fundamentally different machine: HV-only (battery voltage range 120–510V, nominal 340V, CAN interface), 600V max PV voltage, 12kW max DC input, and 8kW EPS backup with a 50A pass-through. The 8.0 does NOT accept LV GivBats — it pairs only with the HV stackable kits (GIV-BAT-10.2-HV through GIV-BAT-20.4-HV).
No. Per the GivEnergy Hybrid Inverter 8.0 Gen 3 datasheet (V2.0 NOV 25), the AC Connection field reads "Single Phase". All three Gen 3 hybrids are single-phase units. For UK three-phase properties the right route is either three single-phase Gen 3 inverters (one per phase) commissioned together with appropriate DNO approval, or a different inverter family entirely. STS can assist with the design conversation if you have a three-phase property.
Yes. All Gen 3 hybrid inverters require external storage — the unit on the wall is the inverter only. For the 3.6 and 5.0 (LV), pair with GivBat 5.12 Gen 3 or GivBat 9.5 Gen 3 (or Gen 1/Gen 2 GivBats with a Gen 3 master); up to 5 modules in parallel per datasheet. For the 8.0 (HV), pair with the GIV-BAT-13.6-HV, GIV-BAT-17.0-HV or GIV-BAT-20.4-HV pre-built stackable kit. Modular design means you can add capacity later without replacing the inverter.
Per the datasheets every Gen 3 hybrid (3.6, 5.0, 8.0) has "In-Built WiFi and LAN" — no external dongle needed, no "GivHub" product. Communication interface to the portal is WiFi (USB) or LAN. There is also RS485 for meter and (on the 3.6/5.0) BMS, and CAN on the 8.0 for the HV battery kit.
Per the Gen 3 hybrid datasheets, all three models carry a 12-year manufacturer warranty. POST-ADMIN: GivEnergy Ltd entered administration on 9 April 2026 and the administrator has confirmed no further hardware warranties will be honoured by GivEnergy Ltd. Alternative recovery routes are installer cover, IBG, Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, MCS Consumer Code redress, and Consumer Rights Act 2015 claims. See the warranty page for the full walk-through.
Datasheet PV input ratings: Gen 3 3.6 = 7.5kWp per string, 2 trackers with 1 string each (2 strings total). Gen 3 5.0 = 7.5kWp per string, same configuration. Gen 3 8.0 = 12kW total DC input, 2 trackers with 2 strings each (4 strings total). As a rough guide, 350–400W panels: 3.6 / 5.0 hybrids handle roughly 18–22 panels total across both strings; the 8.0 handles 28–35+ across four strings. Always size to roof, panel spec, and shading — and a qualified MCS installer must complete the actual design.
Yes. All Gen 3 hybrids run on locally-stored firmware. Solar charging, battery discharge, EPS backup on grid outage, and any already-saved charge schedule continue regardless of cloud status. What you lose without the cloud is remote monitoring, schedule changes via the app, historical graphs and third-party API integrations. From May 2026 the cloud is a paid tier under GivEnergy Software Ltd (GivEnergy Premium, £4.99/month); for owners who would prefer not to depend on it, because the inverter speaks standard local protocols, third-party tools such as Home Assistant integrations can read live values and schedules over your own network.
