I sent a message on their website regarding a problem I have on my Givenergy system. Although not supplied by Ronald, I thought it was worth an email. Within the hour on a Saturday, he phoned and we discussed the problem. He logged in remotely and gave excellent advice. I'm too far away for his on-site help but he did diagnose the problem and was happy also to chat through my thoughts about an upcoming solar/battery install I'm planning. Great bloke.... if only he was nearer!

Our 3 year old GivEnergy batteries froze. They were showing 0% on the app, but they were fully charged. Some how Ron took over our inverter and remotely cured the problem. We live in King’s Lynn, he is in Leeds I believe. Very grateful.

Solar Tech Support is an absolute lifesaver. My solar and battery system stopped working completely, but after one quick phone call, they fixed the problem straight away. The original provider, GivEnergy, has gone into administration, leaving me entirely without support from the original installers. Absolutely wonderful support. I have a GivEnergy system that was installed in 2022, and a firmware update was flagged in the app, so I proceeded to update the software .... and immediately regretted it, as my inverter came up with an error, and was not working at all! With no GivEnergy support available, and my installer saying there was nothing he could do, I googled help, and found Ron. What a stroke of good luck! Submitted an on line enquiry late morning, and received phone call just after 5 pm, and later that evening Ron was able to supply me with old firmware no longer available on the GivEnergy web site. I was then able to update the firmware using a GivEnergy youtube video as reference, and hey presto the system was back up and running. One further slight adjustment by Ron and we are back normal. What a relief. I have no hesitation in recommending Solar Tech Support if you have a problem. Great service! And if you are a GivEnergy system owner, whatever you do, DO NOT UPDATE FIRMWARE!

What actually fails on Growatt kit

Most of the Growatt work that lands with us is the insulation family. Error 04 and the wider isolation fault are the same problem underneath: the insulation between the DC wiring and earth has dropped below the 1 megaohm safety threshold, so the inverter shuts down to protect you. The usual culprits are water inside an MC4 connector, UV-cracked DC cable or a failed panel junction box, and older installs are the most exposed. A fault that appears in wet weather and clears when it dries out is water ingress until proven otherwise.

Error 117 is the other code we get asked about, and it is usually not a fault at all. It trips when the inverter is pushed past its rated output, which normally means an oversized array, an export limit set wrong or a CT clamp fitted backwards.

All of them diagnose the same way: we read your ShineServer fault log, string output and the weather pattern before anyone goes near a roof. The diagnostic is free, and if there is nothing to fix we will tell you so.

Growatt fault questions answered

No. Error 04 and the isolation fault are the same safety shutdown: the insulation between the DC wiring and earth has dropped below the safe threshold, and the inverter re-checks it at every startup, so it will trip again. Restarting fixes nothing and risks electric shock. Isolate the system at the consumer unit and the DC isolator and get the fault diagnosed. The usual cause is water in an MC4 connector, damaged DC cable or a failed junction box, and your ShineServer fault history normally points to which it is.
Depends which one. Error 117 usually can: most cases are an export limit set wrong, a reversed CT clamp or old firmware, all visible in your ShineServer data. If your array is oversized and clipping on peak days, that is normal and needs no fix at all. Insulation faults are physical, so the repair is on-site, but the remote diagnostic matters: we use your ShineServer string data and the weather pattern to pinpoint the likely connector or cable, so any visit is a single trip with the right parts.
The remote diagnostic is free, and it stays free if there is nothing we can fix: no fix, no fee. If the problem is a setting we can correct remotely, as most Error 117 cases are, it is £75, and you only pay once it is fixed. Physical faults like a leaking MC4 connector or damaged cable need an on-site repair, which we quote after the free diagnostic has pinned down where the fault is, so you know exactly what you are paying for before anything is booked.
