Ron is a super star. Two months ago my GivEnergy battery failed a firmware upgrade leaving it a brick. My installer couldn't/wouldn't fix it. GivEnergy couldn't/wouldn't fix it. Then they went into administration and all hope was lost. A flurry of emails later and Ron had diagnosed the fault (failed USB flash drive, something I'd suspected) and talked me through resolving it. Two months of nothing resolved in about 3 hours. It's great to work with someone who pays attention to the details, knows that they're doing (not just following a script) and gets stuff sorted without a fuss or up-charging.

Safety Warning
Do not open your inverter or interfere with DC cabling. Solar panels produce live DC voltage whenever exposed to light. Always use your DC isolator switch and contact a qualified solar engineer for hands-on fault diagnosis.
Step-by-step battery charging diagnosis
Work through these steps in order. Most Fox ESS battery charging issues are resolved by steps 2 or 3 — the work mode or schedule is wrong.
Open the Fox Cloud app or portal and check the battery section. Look at the current SOC, whether power is flowing to or from the battery, and whether any alarms are active. If the SOC reads 100%, the battery is full and will not charge further — this is normal. If alarms are present, note the alarm code — a BMS communication fault or over-temperature alarm will prevent charging until the alarm clears.
In Fox Cloud, check the inverter settings for the current work mode. Self-Use is the correct mode for most UK installations — it charges the battery from excess solar and discharges to cover house loads. Feed-in Priority sends all solar directly to the grid and bypasses the battery entirely — this is the single most common reason an ECS battery sits at low SOC while the inverter is generating. Change the mode to Self-Use and monitor for one full solar day.
If Force Time Use mode is active, check the charge and discharge time windows carefully. A misconfigured schedule can silently block daytime solar charging. Check the MaxSoC setting — if this is set to 10% instead of 100%, the battery stops charging almost immediately. Also check the Min SOC: if set very high (e.g. 90%), the battery has almost no usable range and may appear not to charge or discharge. Normal settings are MaxSoC 100% and Min SOC 10–20%.
In Fox Cloud, check the alarm history for BMS communication errors between the H1 inverter and the ECS battery modules. A BMS fault prevents the inverter from sending charge current to the battery. If you have multiple ECS modules stacked together, check whether all modules are showing online — a single failed module can take the entire battery stack offline. Note the specific alarm code for diagnosis.
ECS battery modules will not accept charge when the internal cell temperature is below 0°C. During cold weather, the BMS blocks charging to protect the lithium cells from damage. Fox Cloud may show a small power draw (100–200W) even though SOC is not rising — this is the internal heater warming the cells to operating temperature. Once the cells reach the safe threshold, normal charging resumes automatically. This is not a fault — it is normal cold-weather protection.
If no configuration issue is found, perform a full power cycle: turn off the inverter at the AC isolator, then turn off the battery at its isolator switch. Wait 60 seconds. Turn the battery back on first, then the inverter — this order ensures the inverter detects the battery during startup. This clears transient BMS communication faults and forces the inverter to re-establish the connection. If the battery still does not charge after power cycling, contact STS for a remote diagnostic.
Fox ESS ECS battery not charging — what you need to know
The Fox ESS H1 hybrid inverter paired with ECS high-voltage battery modules is one of the fastest-growing residential solar-plus-storage systems in the UK market. The hardware is capable, but most battery charging problems are caused by incorrect work mode settings in Fox Cloud rather than hardware failures. Feed-in Priority mode is the number one culprit — it routes all solar generation to the grid and completely bypasses the battery, leaving the ECS modules sitting at whatever SOC they had when the mode was changed. Self-Use mode is correct for the vast majority of UK installations.
The second most common category is Force Time Use misconfiguration. The MaxSoC setting catches many owners — setting it to 10% (the minimum) instead of 100% causes the battery to appear stuck. BMS communication faults are the third most frequent cause, particularly after power cuts or firmware updates that disrupt the data link between the H1 inverter and the ECS modules. A power cycle (battery off, inverter off, wait, battery on first, then inverter) resolves most transient BMS faults. STS diagnoses all of these remotely using Fox Cloud data, alarm histories, and settings review. We are independent from Fox ESS and from your original installer.
