I have a GivEnergy system consisting of two batteries, two inverters and a controlling EMS (Energy Management System) which has not worked since Nov 2025. After six months I discovered Solar Tech Support, reached out to them and Ron phoned me back – how often do you get that service? Could not be more helpful – worked directly with me over the phone, outside what I would call normal working hours. Lucid explanations and we were able to discuss the issues and history using camera and email history. As this was a very rare setup, Ron was able to access an EMS expert in the field to confirm the solution. One sunny day in, I am now only paying for standing charge and a few pence for spikes in grid consumption while battery catches up with house demand.

Ron is a super star. Two months ago my GivEnergy battery failed a firmware upgrade leaving it a brick. My installer couldn't/wouldn't fix it. GivEnergy couldn't/wouldn't fix it. Then they went into administration and all hope was lost. A flurry of emails later and Ron had diagnosed the fault (failed USB flash drive, something I'd suspected) and talked me through resolving it. Two months of nothing resolved in about 3 hours. It's great to work with someone who pays attention to the details, knows that they're doing (not just following a script) and gets stuff sorted without a fuss or up-charging.

A really big thank you to Ron and his team, he has vast amounts of knowledge and got my system back up and running, also good to get on with. I was absolutely lost as to know what to do, no help from installer and somehow came across Ron and am I glad I did. I would definitely definitely recommend him to anyone who has faults with there solar system, any make I would say. Thanks again Ron a pleasure meeting you.

Ronald was great to help me sort out my giv energy inverter issue since company has gone bankrupt in april 26.

Ankur Kr. Gupta · Jun 2026 Google

I've spoken to Ron a couple of times with issues with my Givenergy installation. Such a friendly knowledge guy very highly recommended. Thank you very much for resolving my issues

michael fairhurst · May 2026

My GivEnergy solar and battery system is failing intermittently, GivEnergy is in administration and so is my installer, so it was a relief to get Ron’s expert advice.

Safety Warning

Do not open your inverter or interfere with DC cabling. Solar panels produce live DC voltage whenever exposed to light. Always use your DC isolator switch and contact a qualified solar engineer for hands-on fault diagnosis.

Before you start: open the Fox Cloud app or portal and check the battery section. Note the current SOC percentage, the active work mode, and whether any alarms are showing. This information drives every step below. If the SOC shows 100%, the battery is full and charging is working correctly.
Diagnosis

Step-by-step battery charging diagnosis

Work through these steps in order. Most Fox ESS battery charging issues are resolved by steps 2 or 3 — the work mode or schedule is wrong.

1
Check battery status and alarms in Fox Cloud

Open the Fox Cloud app or portal and check the battery section. Look at the current SOC, whether power is flowing to or from the battery, and whether any alarms are active. If the SOC reads 100%, the battery is full and will not charge further — this is normal. If alarms are present, note the alarm code — a BMS communication fault or over-temperature alarm will prevent charging until the alarm clears.

2
Verify the work mode is set to Self-Use

In Fox Cloud, check the inverter settings for the current work mode. Self-Use is the correct mode for most UK installations — it charges the battery from excess solar and discharges to cover house loads. Feed-in Priority sends all solar directly to the grid and bypasses the battery entirely — this is the single most common reason an ECS battery sits at low SOC while the inverter is generating. Change the mode to Self-Use and monitor for one full solar day.

3
Check Force Time Use schedule and Min/Max SOC settings

If Force Time Use mode is active, check the charge and discharge time windows carefully. A misconfigured schedule can silently block daytime solar charging. Check the MaxSoC setting — if this is set to 10% instead of 100%, the battery stops charging almost immediately. Also check the Min SOC: if set very high (e.g. 90%), the battery has almost no usable range and may appear not to charge or discharge. Normal settings are MaxSoC 100% and Min SOC 10–20%.

4
Check for BMS communication faults and module status

In Fox Cloud, check the alarm history for BMS communication errors between the H1 inverter and the ECS battery modules. A BMS fault prevents the inverter from sending charge current to the battery. If you have multiple ECS modules stacked together, check whether all modules are showing online — a single failed module can take the entire battery stack offline. Note the specific alarm code for diagnosis.

5
Consider battery temperature lockout (cold weather)

ECS battery modules will not accept charge when the internal cell temperature is below 0°C. During cold weather, the BMS blocks charging to protect the lithium cells from damage. Fox Cloud may show a small power draw (100–200W) even though SOC is not rising — this is the internal heater warming the cells to operating temperature. Once the cells reach the safe threshold, normal charging resumes automatically. This is not a fault — it is normal cold-weather protection.

6
Power cycle the battery and inverter

If no configuration issue is found, perform a full power cycle: turn off the inverter at the AC isolator, then turn off the battery at its isolator switch. Wait 60 seconds. Turn the battery back on first, then the inverter — this order ensures the inverter detects the battery during startup. This clears transient BMS communication faults and forces the inverter to re-establish the connection. If the battery still does not charge after power cycling, contact STS for a remote diagnostic.

Fox ESS ECS battery not charging — what you need to know

The Fox ESS H1 hybrid inverter paired with ECS high-voltage battery modules is one of the fastest-growing residential solar-plus-storage systems in the UK market. The hardware is capable, but most battery charging problems are caused by incorrect work mode settings in Fox Cloud rather than hardware failures. Feed-in Priority mode is the number one culprit — it routes all solar generation to the grid and completely bypasses the battery, leaving the ECS modules sitting at whatever SOC they had when the mode was changed. Self-Use mode is correct for the vast majority of UK installations.

The second most common category is Force Time Use misconfiguration. The MaxSoC setting catches many owners — setting it to 10% (the minimum) instead of 100% causes the battery to appear stuck. BMS communication faults are the third most frequent cause, particularly after power cuts or firmware updates that disrupt the data link between the H1 inverter and the ECS modules. A power cycle (battery off, inverter off, wait, battery on first, then inverter) resolves most transient BMS faults. STS diagnoses all of these remotely using Fox Cloud data, alarm histories, and settings review. We are independent from Fox ESS and from your original installer.

FAQ

Fox ESS battery charging — common questions

The most common cause is the work mode being set to Feed-in Priority in Fox Cloud. This mode sends all solar generation directly to the grid and bypasses the battery entirely. Change the work mode to Self-Use — this prioritises charging the battery from excess solar before exporting. Also check for active BMS communication alarms and verify the battery temperature is above 0°C.
Open the Fox Cloud app, navigate to the inverter settings page, and look for the Work Mode option. The available modes are Self-Use (charges battery from excess solar), Feed-in Priority (exports to grid first), Force Time Use (scheduled charge/discharge windows), and Backup (holds battery for emergency use). Select Self-Use for normal operation. If you're unsure which mode to use, book a remote diagnostic and we'll configure it correctly.
A BMS (Battery Management System) communication fault means the H1 inverter has lost its data link to the ECS battery modules. This prevents charging and discharging. Common causes include a loose communication cable, a firmware mismatch, or a battery module in protection state. A power cycle often resolves transient faults. Persistent BMS alarms may indicate a hardware fault requiring on-site inspection.
A small power draw (100–200W) with static SOC usually means the battery's internal heater is warming the cells. ECS lithium battery modules cannot accept charge below 0°C, so the BMS activates heating first. Once cell temperature reaches the safe charging threshold, normal charging begins and SOC starts to rise. This is normal cold-weather behaviour and not a fault.
Yes. Use Force Time Use mode in Fox Cloud and set a charge window with Grid Charge enabled. This is typically used for overnight charging on cheap-rate tariffs like Octopus Go or Economy 7. Set the charge start and end times to match your off-peak window, set MaxSoC to 100%, and ensure Grid Charge is toggled on. The battery will charge from the grid during this window regardless of solar availability.
If the battery is charged but won't discharge, the usual causes are: the work mode set to Feed-in Priority (so solar exports instead of using the battery — switch to Self-Use), a Min SOC / discharge floor set too high (the battery holds that reserve and won't go below it), a Force Time Use schedule blocking discharge in that window, or a BMS communication alarm. Check the work mode and Min SOC first in Fox Cloud; if both look right and it still won't discharge, a BMS link issue or a module in protection is the likely cause.
The remote diagnostic is free — we read your Fox Cloud work mode, SOC history, and alarm log and tell you exactly why the battery isn't charging or discharging. If it's a settings or work-mode fix we can make remotely, it's £75, and you only pay if we fix it. If it's a BMS or module hardware fault that needs an on-site visit, that starts from £245, quoted first.
Usually the same day. Most battery work-mode and charging faults are confirmed in a single 30-minute remote session — we review your Fox Cloud settings and SOC trend while you describe what the battery is doing. You get a written summary of the cause and the recommended fix straight after the call.
