Solar Repair & Support in Huddersfield

Huddersfield sits in the Colne and Holme valleys — steep hillsides, stone-built terraces, and narrow streets where solar installations face challenges you don't get on flat terrain. Shading from neighbouring rooflines and valley sides is a constant factor, and many of the FiT-era systems installed here in 2012–2015 are now reaching the age where inverters fail. We're 30 minutes from our Leeds base and cover the entire Kirklees district.

Ron took me through a diagnostic to confirm my GivEnergy Inverter had a fault. A common one as it turns out with the AC Inverter. As GivEnergy is defunct there is no immediate fix, aside from sourcing 2nd hand replacement. It may be that a fix becomes available over the summer which would make a lot of GivEnergy customers happy (Again)

I reached on behalf of a friend, who had lost control of their battery following a storm. A couple giv energy “dealers” had attempted and said different fixes. None worked. Solar tech support solved it remotely on the first attempt almost instantly. Genuinely a 10/10 service.

Contacted Ron with a problem and he sorted it out quickly with no problems at all. Very knowledgeable on anything solar/ batteries. I would recommend him to anyone

Brilliant support to get my solar battery working again. I didn’t expect help on a Saturday but Ron answered the phone, listened and sent me the information I needed to get it going, answered questions etc. A brilliant service I’d happily recommend.

Alison F. Cockerill · Jun 2026 Google

Massively massively recommended. We had a big battery array (49kW across three phases) put in four years ago. c £35k cost. It’s been a total nightmare for many reasons, not least 1. our installer being totally useless and unresponsive and 2. Givenergy, our battery supplier, going bust. Long story short it had never worked anywhere near properly despite countless hours on phones and emails; the best we’d achieved was one third of the batteries working. Rather than write it off, I asked a PM friend to try to source someone who could come on site and review and revive the system. He found Solar Tech Support and Ron. Ron assured us he was the man to get it going again. After so many years of pain, I was not convinced but, true to his word, five hours later it was up and running. Lovely chap, super knowledgeable with a support team to lean on who are also clearly super technical. I honestly didn’t think there was much chance of getting this array going ever again so was absolutely delighted when Ron and team pulled it off. Bravo!

Will Wynne · Jun 2026 Google

Contacted Solar Tech Support in desperation. After explaining the issues I had with my system a diagnosis was made and a solution proposed. Fantastic service, even contacted a manufacturer to arrange replacement parts for me. Great communications, explained all they were doing and what I had to do, clearly and precisly. Followed up to confirm all was ok. Excellent service.

Solar in Huddersfield — valley terrain, shading, and ageing FiT systems

Huddersfield's geography shapes its solar landscape. The town sprawls across two valleys with steep sides, and the housing stock is dominated by stone-built terraces and semis from the Victorian and inter-war periods. Solar installations here had to work harder from day one — limited south-facing roof space, shading from adjacent buildings, and panels tilted at whatever angle the slate roof dictates. The systems that were installed work well, but they need specialist support when something goes wrong.

Valley terrain and shading challenges

Huddersfield's steep valley sides mean many properties have panels that receive direct sun for fewer hours than flat-terrain installations. Neighbouring rooflines cast shadows, mature trees on valley slopes block afternoon sun, and the hills themselves shade lower streets in winter. String inverters suffer most — one shaded panel drags down the whole string. Properties with SolarEdge optimisers handle this better, and we recommend upgrades where shading is the primary performance issue.

Stone terraces with compact arrays

The classic Huddersfield solar installation is a compact 2–3kW array on a stone-built terrace — four to eight panels squeezed onto a narrow roof, often east-west split rather than true south-facing. These systems were typically installed under the FiT scheme between 2012 and 2015 with Fronius, Solis, or Growatt string inverters. The panels are usually fine; it's the inverter that's now reaching end of life after 10+ years of continuous operation.

Government scheme installs — Mark Group territory

Huddersfield had significant uptake of government-backed solar installations through the ECO and CESP schemes. Mark Group, which went into administration in 2015, installed thousands of systems across the Kirklees district — particularly on social housing and ex-council properties. These systems are now orphaned: no installer to call, ageing Fronius inverters, and no one maintaining them. We handle full system recovery.

Growing battery retrofit market

GivEnergy battery retrofits are increasingly popular in Huddersfield as homeowners with existing FiT-era arrays look to store excess generation rather than export it for a few pence per unit. AC-coupled batteries bolt onto the existing system without touching the original wiring. But the configuration needs to account for the lower generation profiles typical of valley-side installations — charge schedules that work in Harrogate don't necessarily work here.

Services

What we do in Huddersfield

Huddersfield's hilly terrain and exposed rooflines mean solar systems work hard — and faults show up faster. We run a remote diagnostic before every on-site visit, arriving with the right parts and a clear plan. No call-out fees. All pricing confirmed before work begins.

Common Problems

What goes wrong with solar systems in Huddersfield

Huddersfield's terrain and housing stock create a specific set of issues. These are the faults we diagnose most often across the Kirklees district.

1
String inverter underperformance from partial shading

The most common performance issue in Huddersfield. On a string inverter system, all panels in a string operate at the level of the weakest panel. When one or two panels are shaded by a neighbouring chimney, tree, or hillside, the entire string output drops — sometimes by 30–50%. The monitoring data shows the pattern clearly. Where shading is the root cause, we can recommend optimiser retrofits or string reconfiguration to isolate the affected panels. Fault diagnosis →

2
Fronius inverter failures on Mark Group installs

Mark Group installed thousands of Fronius IG and IG Plus inverters across Huddersfield through government energy efficiency schemes. These units are now 10–12 years old and reaching end of life. Symptoms: blank display, recurring State 509 or State 306 fault codes, intermittent shutdowns. The units are past economic repair — replacement with a modern hybrid inverter is the route. We stock the most common models and typically complete a swap in a single visit. Inverter replacement →

3
Battery retrofit not accounting for lower generation profile

GivEnergy battery retrofits on Huddersfield FiT-era systems need different configuration to systems on flat terrain. A 2.5kW array on a valley-side terrace generates less daily surplus than a 4kW system on an open suburban semi. The default charge schedules assume more generation than is available, leading to the battery charging predominantly from the grid rather than from solar. We reconfigure to match the actual generation profile and optimise for the homeowner's tariff. GivEnergy support →

4
Orphaned systems with no monitoring or documentation

Many Huddersfield solar systems were installed through government schemes by companies that no longer exist. The homeowner may never have had monitoring set up, the MCS certificate is missing, and nobody has serviced the system since installation. We restore monitoring (or set it up for the first time), retrieve documentation through MCS records, verify warranty status, and bring the system back under proper management. Your Huddersfield installer has closed — we take over from here

Huddersfield was heavily served by government scheme installers — particularly Mark Group, which installed thousands of systems across Kirklees before going into administration. If your installer has closed, the recovery process covers monitoring, documentation, warranty verification, and ongoing support.

Installer not listed? The recovery process is the same regardless of who installed your system. Full installer gone bust guide or book a call.

GivEnergy

GivEnergy battery retrofits — configured for Huddersfield's terrain

GivEnergy is the most popular battery brand for Huddersfield retrofits — their AC-coupled systems bolt onto existing FiT-era arrays without modifying the original wiring. But Huddersfield systems generate less daily surplus than equivalent arrays on flat terrain, and the battery configuration needs to reflect that. We set up charge schedules that account for actual generation profiles, not the manufacturer defaults.

CT clamp diagnosis, calibration, and repositioning
Firmware updates and inverter fault diagnosis
Fronius, Solis, Growatt — we also support the original inverter brands

FAQ

Solar repair in Huddersfield — common questions

Huddersfield is about 30 minutes from our Leeds base — within our core coverage area. For urgent faults like a dead inverter or total generation loss, we can usually attend within one to two working days. Scheduled work such as inverter replacements and annual maintenance is typically within the same week. A free remote diagnostic can identify most faults same-day if you need answers before the on-site visit.
Yes, hillside properties are more prone to shading issues than flat-terrain installations. In Huddersfield, steep valley sides mean neighbouring rooflines, trees, and the terrain itself can cast shadows across panels — especially in winter when the sun is low. If your system has a standard string inverter, shading on even one panel drags down the output of the entire string. Systems with SolarEdge optimisers or Enphase microinverters handle this better because each panel operates independently. We diagnose shading-related underperformance and recommend the most cost-effective fix.
Inverter replacement starts £795, which includes the new unit, removal of the old one, installation, configuration, and commissioning. The exact price depends on the brand, model, and system size. Many older Huddersfield systems use Fronius or Solis string inverters that are now past economic repair — replacement with a modern equivalent is the most cost-effective route. A free remote diagnostic confirms exactly what's needed before we quote. Inverter replacement service →
