Victron Energy Support — MultiPlus, VE.Bus & Off-Grid Fault Diagnosis

Victron systems are built differently from grid-tied brands. VE.Bus networking, dedicated MPPT charge controllers, GX-series monitoring, and inverter-charger topologies all need specialist knowledge. We diagnose the full Victron ecosystem — MultiPlus, Quattro, SmartSolar, Cerbo GX, and third-party battery integrations.

Safety: If your Victron system is making unusual noises, showing persistent alarms, or running hot, isolate at the AC and DC switches before investigating.

Excellent response to diagnose a problem on our SolarEdge installation. Kept us informed at every step. Diagnosis quickly completed and solution implemented.

Ron is a super star. Two months ago my GivEnergy battery failed a firmware upgrade leaving it a brick. My installer couldn't/wouldn't fix it. GivEnergy couldn't/wouldn't fix it. Then they went into administration and all hope was lost. A flurry of emails later and Ron had diagnosed the fault (failed USB flash drive, something I'd suspected) and talked me through resolving it. Two months of nothing resolved in about 3 hours. It's great to work with someone who pays attention to the details, knows that they're doing (not just following a script) and gets stuff sorted without a fuss or up-charging.

My GivEnergy hybrid inverter + battery system had worked faultlessly for 3 years when it suddenly stopped charging and discharging the battery. On contacting my supplier, who had used a sub-contractor for the installation work, I was provided with an email address at GivEnergy but, as it turned out, this is only for GivEnergy Software who are not able to assist. A Google search led to the Solar Tech Support web site, which contains a wealth of helpful information. I requested a remote solar diagnostic, and after providing Ron access to my inverter, he was able to identify and fix the problem within minutes. I am very impressed by Ron’s expertise and knowledge, which included useful information on the current state of GivEnergy Ltd. I would thoroughly recommend Solar Tech Support.

I sent a message on their website regarding a problem I have on my Givenergy system. Although not supplied by Ronald, I thought it was worth an email. Within the hour on a Saturday, he phoned and we discussed the problem. He logged in remotely and gave excellent advice. I'm too far away for his on-site help but he did diagnose the problem and was happy also to chat through my thoughts about an upcoming solar/battery install I'm planning. Great bloke.... if only he was nearer!

Brilliant support to get my solar battery working again. I didn’t expect help on a Saturday but Ron answered the phone, listened and sent me the information I needed to get it going, answered questions etc. A brilliant service I’d happily recommend.

Thank you for your diligence. On this occasion the battery was able to be saved but they have given a route to hopefully arrange a repair from the manufacturer.

Victron Faults

Common Victron problems we diagnose

Victron systems use VE.Bus networking, dedicated MPPT controllers, and GX monitoring — a fundamentally different architecture from grid-tied brands. These are the fault categories we handle most.

Services

What we do for Victron system owners

Remote Victron System Diagnostic

We access your VRM portal data, review alarm logs, check VE.Bus and VE.Direct communication status, and analyse MPPT performance data to identify the root cause of any fault.

About Victron Energy systems — what makes them different

Victron Energy is a Dutch manufacturer that dominates the UK off-grid and hybrid solar market. Unlike grid-tied inverter brands that combine everything into a single box, Victron uses a component-based architecture: separate inverter-chargers (MultiPlus, MultiPlus-II, Quattro), dedicated MPPT solar charge controllers (SmartSolar, BlueSolar), and a central monitoring hub (Cerbo GX or Venus GX) running Venus OS. These components connect via VE.Bus (for inverter-chargers), VE.Direct (for MPPT controllers and battery monitors), and VE.Can (for compatible batteries and BMS units).

This modularity gives Victron systems enormous flexibility — supporting parallel operation, three-phase configurations, multiple MPPT strings, and a wide range of third-party batteries. The trade-off is complexity. The most common queries we handle: MultiPlus not charging, VE.Bus error codes, MPPT PV overvoltage, Cerbo GX offline, battery BMS disconnect, and generator auto-start failures. Victron's own VRM portal provides excellent data when it's connected — our job is diagnosing faults when it isn't, or when the data reveals a configuration problem. STS provides independent support — not affiliated with Victron Energy.

FAQ

Victron Energy questions answered

The most common cause is overload — the connected load exceeds the MultiPlus continuous power rating. This happens frequently in off-grid systems running electric showers, kettles, or immersion heaters. Other causes include low battery voltage triggering a low-voltage disconnect, a VE.Bus communication fault between paralleled units, overtemperature in poorly ventilated installations, and incorrect AC input current limit settings.
VE.Bus is Victron's proprietary protocol that connects MultiPlus and Quattro units in parallel or three-phase setups. It uses RJ-45 cables in a daisy-chain topology. Faults typically occur when a cable is loose or damaged, when self-crimped connectors have wrong pin assignments, or when the phase master is lost in a multi-unit system. Errors are numbered — 3, 5, 11, 14, and 17 are the most common.
You need a GX device — typically a Cerbo GX — connected to your Victron system via VE.Bus and VE.Direct, and to the internet via Ethernet or WiFi. This feeds data to the VRM portal, which shows live performance, historical graphs, and alarm notifications. If VRM shows your system offline, the most common causes are WiFi dropout, static IP misconfiguration, or VRM access token expiry.
Yes. Many UK Victron installations use third-party lithium batteries — Pylontech, BYD, and Dyness are common pairings. We diagnose the full system: Victron hardware, battery BMS communication, charge parameters, and DVCC configuration. Third-party BMS disconnects are one of the most common fault categories we see on Victron systems.
