One of the biggest home GivEnergy arrays in the country and it had never worked

Brilliant. He fitted a new dongle and set the system up properly. Even better, he explained why the storage batteries don't work in a power cut - not correctly wired up - expensive to fix, but a simple turn of the master switch will give emergency power. He is the third technician to look at this issue and the only one to resolve it. Friendly and appoachable, comes when he says he will and reasonable charges. What's not to like!

Ron is incredibly knowledgeable about solar installs in general but knows givenergy products inside out and the key personnel that worked there from the start to the end. Had issues with 10yr+ installation. 1 inverter going into alarm mode, unable to access monitoring apps and wanted someone to review and document worthiness of the 2 systems I have. As you will find with older systems, the original installers have moved on, other companies only want to replace and install new, or make up silly prices as they don't want the work, so struggling for 18 month plus trying to source someone to do this. Sometimes it takes a team, a late finish, and a bit of stubbornness. A customer got in touch about a GivEnergy system that, in their words, had never worked since the day it was installed. Four years ago, and around £35,000 later, they own one of the biggest residential GivEnergy arrays in the country — and for four years, all of that capacity had saved them precisely nothing.

The system

This is no small setup. It runs six GivEnergy AC3 inverters split across a three-phase supply, with an EMS (Energy Management System) coordinating each phase, EPS backup circuits wired off every inverter to keep essential loads alive in a power cut, the grid and metering comms carried over LoRa wireless links, and a stack of battery modules to match. On paper, a serious bit of engineering. In practice, four years of doing nothing.

How a system this size ends up doing nothing

It is easy to assume that the more you spend, the better it works. With large battery systems, the opposite risk is real: the bigger and more complex the array, the more there is to get right at commissioning — and the more unforgiving it is when that does not happen.

A system like this has to be set up to work as one. Across three phases, the six AC3 inverters have to be balanced and configured correctly over the supply, with an EMS on each phase coordinating generation and load. The battery modules need addressing and balancing, the metering and CT sensing has to be right, the EPS backup circuits on each inverter have to be wired and configured so the essential loads carry over cleanly when the grid drops, and — to make it that bit harder — the grid and metering comms on this system run over LoRa wireless radio rather than wired, so those links have to pair and hold a reliable connection too. On top of all that, the firmware across the whole stack needs to line up. That is a lot of layers, and they all have to agree with each other. Get any one of them wrong at commissioning and you can be left with a system that looks installed — neat boxes, tidy cabling, lights on — but never actually pulls together and does its job.

That is where this one had sat for four years. With the original install long behind them, and GivEnergy itself now in administration, the owner had run out of people to call.

A late one

As it happened, we were already on another job about ten minutes away. So the offer was simple: if you are up for a late finish, we will stay on and have a proper go at it tonight.

Five hours

It took the full evening. A lot of force charging to wake the battery modules up and bring them back into balance. A fair bit of reconfiguring to get the inverters, the phases and the batteries talking to each other the way they should have from the start. Plenty of head-scratching, the odd bit of swearing, and — the stubborn part — coaxing a single weak cell that was dragging the whole pack back into line. Careful charging, careful balancing, and eventually it came back.

And then, after four years, it simply started doing what it was supposed to. The system is now working exactly as it should have on the day it was installed.

The lesson here is not about the kit — GivEnergy hardware, properly set up, does the job. It is that even the biggest, most expensive systems can be let down by how they were commissioned, and that this is very often recoverable. A system written off as a £35,000 mistake turned out to be one good evening away from working.

Very often, yes. A system that has never performed is usually a commissioning or configuration problem rather than faulty hardware — the kit was fitted but never correctly set up to work as one. That is almost always recoverable without replacing anything, even years later.
Yes. The more inverters, batteries and phases involved, the more there is to configure and the less forgiving it is. Inverters have to be balanced and set up across the phases, an EMS coordinates each phase, the battery modules need addressing and balancing, EPS backup circuits and the comms (often wireless LoRa links) all have to agree, and the firmware has to line up. Get any one layer wrong at commissioning and the whole system can sit there doing nothing.
