Add Battery to Existing Solar in Newport

Newport is full of FiT-era solar — thousands of South Wales homes fitted panels between 2011 and 2016 and have run solar-only ever since, exporting surplus by day and buying it back at a far higher rate each evening. Adding a GivEnergy battery captures that surplus for evening use instead. We cover Newport from our Cardiff base, roughly 12 miles east — a 20-minute run along the M4 — so whether you're on a terrace in Maindee, a semi in Malpas or a newer home in Rogerstone, we survey the next day and recommend the right battery for your inverter.

What an Amazing service and so helpful . I have had problems with a faulty GivEnergy inverter and Ron has been so diligent in investigating and reporting on it . I’d give him more than 5 stars if I could for his help in diagnosis and potential solution. Thoroughly recommend .

Wow... a firmware update to my inverter sent the whole system into meltdown – the battery discharged, and the house seemed to be drawing power, and the solar, who knows where that was going? Aghhh... A short email exchange with Roland and Solar Tech Support sorted the problem... the firmware had reversed a setting (from when it was installed), and the CT clamp needed to be reversed. As soon as I had done that, the world returned to normal. Thanks, Roland; there is no way I would have come to that conclusion. Would I recommend them? You bet! Worth the fee? You bet, again!

Pete Hawkins · Jul 2026 Google

Ron took me through a diagnostic to confirm my GivEnergy Inverter had a fault. A common one as it turns out with the AC Inverter. As GivEnergy is defunct there is no immediate fix, aside from sourcing 2nd hand replacement. It may be that a fix becomes available over the summer which would make a lot of GivEnergy customers happy (Again)

Tony Deacon · May 2026

Great service. Got our Givenergy battery back online remotely when others said it needed an onsite visit. Ron resolved the issue within about an hour of my email. Brilliant service.

Newport context

Newport is full of FiT-era solar with no battery — and we're 20 minutes away

South Wales took up the Feed-in Tariff in big numbers between 2011 and 2016, and most of those Newport systems are still solar-only a decade later. They generate happily through the day, export the surplus for pennies, then buy it back at a much higher rate every evening. A battery closes that gap. We cover Newport from our Cardiff base — about 12 miles east, a 20-minute run on the M4 — so it's one of the quickest places we reach, with next-day surveys and no travel surcharge. We start with a free remote diagnostic the same day you get in touch.

GivEnergy

Our most-installed retrofit battery in South Wales — pairs with any existing inverter brand

Some of those early Newport systems were fitted by installers that have since closed — Solar Plants of Port Talbot, just along the M4, was dissolved in 2022, and several other South Wales firms followed. If yours was one of them, the panels are almost certainly still generating but may never have been upgraded. Adding a battery is straightforward: we identify the existing hardware, recover monitoring access, verify FiT registration, and retrofit a GivEnergy battery in a single process. No original documentation needed.

Brand compatibility

How a GivEnergy battery retrofit works with your specific inverter

Every inverter brand integrates with storage a little differently. Here's what the retrofit looks like for the brands most common across Newport — with GivEnergy as the battery in almost every case.

Already have GivEnergy? Expand your storage — St Julians, Caerleon, Allt-yr-yn

GivEnergy is the dominant battery in Newport retrofits. If you already have a GivEnergy AIO or hybrid and want more capacity, we add a slave or expansion battery to your existing stack — no new inverter needed. If your GivEnergy system isn't performing as expected, we diagnose and reconfigure remotely before recommending any new hardware. GivEnergy support → · add an expansion battery →

SolarEdge with optimisers — Malpas, Bettws, Rogerstone

SolarEdge systems use DC optimisers on each panel with a central inverter. AC-coupling a GivEnergy battery alongside SolarEdge is straightforward — the battery inverter connects to the consumer unit independently. SolarEdge's own StorEdge interface exists but needs a compatible SolarEdge inverter. For most Newport homes, an independent AC-coupled GivEnergy battery is cheaper and more flexible than the StorEdge route, and your panel-level optimisation continues unchanged.

Enphase microinverters — premium installs across NP postcodes

Enphase converts DC to AC at each panel, so there's no central string inverter. That means DC coupling isn't an option — AC coupling is the only route, which is actually ideal. You add a GivEnergy battery inverter to the consumer unit, the CT clamp monitors total consumption, and the battery charges from surplus Enphase output. Enphase's own IQ battery exists but costs significantly more than a third-party AC-coupled alternative. We install both — your choice.

Fronius & Solis string inverters — FiT-era systems across Newport

The most straightforward retrofit. Fronius IG, Primo, and Solis string inverters are simple solar-only units — AC-coupling a GivEnergy battery alongside them needs no changes to the existing system at all. If the Fronius or Solis is approaching end of life (10+ years), consider combining the inverter replacement with a DC-coupled battery in one visit — saves a second installation and often works out cheaper than two separate jobs.

Coupling options

AC or DC coupling? The right answer depends on your inverter

For most Newport systems — the solar-only FiT-era arrays on terraces across Maindee, Pillgwenlly and Stow Hill — AC coupling is the better option. DC coupling makes sense when an older inverter is already failing and due for replacement anyway.

AC Coupling — the right choice for most
Works with every existing inverter — SolarEdge, Enphase, Fronius, Solis, all of them
Your current solar setup stays exactly as it is — zero disruption
Single-day GivEnergy install, no scaffolding, no roof work
From £2,995 for a first battery — capacity confirmed in your quote
DC Coupling — when your inverter needs replacing anyway
Combines inverter replacement and battery in one visit — saves installation cost
Higher round-trip efficiency — solar charges the battery on the DC bus
Not compatible with SolarEdge optimiser or Enphase microinverter architectures
From £3,495 for the battery fit, plus the hybrid inverter — quoted by capacity

Newport-specific recommendation: If you have a SolarEdge or Enphase system, AC coupling is the only practical route — and a GivEnergy battery does the job perfectly. If you have a healthy Fronius or Solis, AC coupling is cheaper. If that Fronius or Solis is showing its age, DC coupling lets you swap the inverter and add a battery in one go. A free remote diagnostic tells you exactly where you stand — same day. Full technical comparison →

Battery options

Battery systems we install across Newport

Newport's housing runs from tight Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Maindee and Pillgwenlly to larger semis in Allt-yr-yn, Caerleon and St Julians. A 4.8 kWh GivEnergy AIO suits a 2–3 kW terrace; a larger stack makes sense for a bigger system running Octopus Flux. We recommend on your system, usage and space — not on commission.

GivEnergy All-in-One

The most popular battery retrofit in Newport by a wide margin. 4.8 kWh or 9.5 kWh in a single wall-mounted unit. Pairs with any existing inverter brand and expands with extra battery modules later. Optional EPS backup available. GivEnergy support →

Growatt SPH + ARK

Modular battery stack that scales from around 5 kWh upward. A strong choice for larger Newport properties with bigger systems and high evening consumption. Works in both AC and DC coupling, with reliable firmware and a clean monitoring interface.

SolaX Hybrid + T-BAT

Compact and quiet — fits well in the under-stairs cupboards and small utility spaces common in Newport's older terraced housing around Maindee and Stow Hill. Solid app-based monitoring, and good value in the smaller-capacity range.

Sunsynk / Fox ESS / Lux Power

All offer AC and DC coupling with built-in EPS capability. Popular on full new-build installs across Newport and the surrounding Gwent levels. Brand choice often comes down to monitoring-platform preference and consumer-unit layout. We install and commission all three.

FAQ

Adding a battery in Newport — common questions

A GivEnergy AC-coupled battery retrofit in Newport starts at £2,995 for a first-battery install — a GivEnergy All-in-One or equivalent, fully installed and commissioned with DNO paperwork handled. The final figure depends on capacity (4.8 kWh vs 9.5 kWh) and any consumer-unit work; your written quote confirms it. DC-coupled installs — where we replace your existing inverter with a hybrid model and add storage together — start from £3,495 for the battery fit, with the hybrid inverter quoted separately. Newport is around 12 miles east of our Cardiff base on the M4, so there's no travel surcharge. A free remote diagnostic confirms the right option.
Yes, and both take the same AC-coupled route even though the two architectures are very different. SolarEdge runs DC optimisers into a central inverter, so a GivEnergy battery inverter simply joins on the AC side and your panel-level optimisation carries on untouched. Enphase converts to AC at each panel with microinverters, which makes AC coupling the only option and an ideal one: the CT clamp meters whole-house consumption and the battery charges from surplus microinverter output. Enphase's own IQ battery exists, but an AC-coupled GivEnergy unit usually costs significantly less. We confirm CT clamp placement and consumer-unit space at the Newport survey before any hardware is ordered. Full battery guide →
