Absolutely wonderful support. I have a GivEnergy system that was installed in 2022, and a firmware update was flagged in the app, so I proceeded to update the software .... and immediately regretted it, as my inverter came up with an error, and was not working at all! With no GivEnergy support available, and my installer saying there was nothing he could do, I googled help, and found Ron. What a stroke of good luck! Submitted an on line enquiry late morning, and received phone call just after 5 pm, and later that evening Ron was able to supply me with old firmware no longer available on the GivEnergy web site. I was then able to update the firmware using a GivEnergy youtube video as reference, and hey presto the system was back up and running. One further slight adjustment by Ron and we are back normal. What a relief. I have no hesitation in recommending Solar Tech Support if you have a problem. Great service! And if you are a GivEnergy system owner, whatever you do, DO NOT UPDATE FIRMWARE!

Book diagnosticHow the diagnostic worksExcellent service from Solar Tech Support. Extremely quick to respond, easy to deal with and clearly very talented engineers. They were persistent throughout a complex GivEnergy battery issue and resolved everything completely. Highly knowledgeable, professional and reassuring support from start to finish. Highly recommended.
Ron very quickly diagnosed what was wrong with my GivEnergy system. Unfortunately the kit has died after only 3.5 years of use-which is quite sad and timing couldn’t be worse with GivEnergy gone bust. Ron gave me advise on how to handle this with my installer. I’m hoping they’ll be forthcoming, but if they aren’t i now have a good idea how to deal with that. Thanks a lot Ron!
Thank you for your diligence. On this occasion the battery was able to be saved but they have given a route to hopefully arrange a repair from the manufacturer.
My Givenergy battery stopped working nearly a month ago. After unsuccessfully reaching out to my installer, who looks like he's also busted, I found Solar Tech Support on a Google search. They fixed my issue in a couple of hours. Any frustrated Givenergy customers, I highly recommend these guys.
Brilliant support to get my solar battery working again. I didn’t expect help on a Saturday but Ron answered the phone, listened and sent me the information I needed to get it going, answered questions etc. A brilliant service I’d happily recommend.
Why Newport has so many GivEnergy systems — and so many needing support
Newport's solar story runs in two waves. The Feed-in Tariff years (2011–2016) put string-inverter solar on thousands of roofs — many on the Victorian terraces of Maindee, Pillgwenlly and Stow Hill, the post-war semis of Malpas, Bettws and Ringland, and across council and Welsh Government schemes (Nest and Newport City Homes social housing programmes) that fitted PV widely. Then the energy crisis brought a GivEnergy battery boom — retrofits onto those ageing FiT systems, plus Gen 3 hybrids and All-in-One units on newer installs in Rogerstone, Allt-yr-yn, St Julians and the Marshfield fringes. The hardware is everywhere. Local aftercare often isn't — which is where an independent a short hop down the M4 in Cardiff comes in.
A large share of Newport's GivEnergy batteries were AC-coupled onto solar fitted in 2011–2016 across Maindee, Caerleon, Malpas and St Julians. Bolting a modern battery onto a decade-old string inverter creates charge-flow and CT clamp challenges the original installer didn't always resolve — and on the terraced roofs of Pillgwenlly and Stow Hill, chimney shading from neighbouring stacks complicates the generation picture further.
Nest and Newport City Homes social-housing programmes put PV — and increasingly GivEnergy storage — onto homes across Bettws, Ringland and the wider city. Many homeowners inherited these systems, or were never shown how the battery and tariff settings work. Monitoring is often still locked to an installer or scheme account the resident can't access.
GivEnergy Gen 3 hybrids and All-in-One units on newer installs around Rogerstone, Allt-yr-yn, Marshfield and out toward Cwmbran. These are modern, capable systems — but Gen 3 firmware is still maturing, and we regularly see charge-schedule behaviour that differs from the Gen 2 units homeowners researched before buying.
Pillgwenlly, Maindee and the riverfront sit where the River Usk meets the Severn estuary, where salt-laden air accelerates corrosion of outdoor and loft-mounted string inverters fitted in the FiT years. As these units reach end of life, an inverter swap — often to a GivEnergy hybrid that adds battery readiness — is one of the most common upgrades we do near the water.
GivEnergy problems we fix most often in Newport
These are the faults we diagnose on Newport GivEnergy systems regularly. Most are resolved remotely, same day. Each links to a detailed guide.
The single most common fault on Newport GivEnergy systems. Solar panels generating but the battery stays empty. On retrofit installs (a battery added to an existing FiT-era system), the cause is almost always a CT clamp fitted in the wrong direction or eco mode left disabled after commissioning. On hybrid systems, it's usually a charge target or SOC floor misconfiguration. Resolved remotely via the portal.
Battery shows 100% but the house pulls from the grid instead of the battery. On Newport systems this is overwhelmingly a CT clamp direction issue — the clamp tells the inverter which way electricity flows, and if it's backwards the system thinks the house doesn't need power. It's common on terraced-house consumer units in Maindee and Pillgwenlly where the clamp was clipped on quickly. One of the fastest fixes we do — usually resolved in the diagnostic session itself.
Charge schedule set but the battery doesn't fill overnight. Common on Newport systems where homeowners switched to Octopus Go or Intelligent Go after the GivEnergy system was installed — the charge window needs updating to match the new tariff's cheap-rate hours. Also caused by firmware updates resetting the charge schedule back to defaults.
GivEnergy app or portal says the system is offline. The system is almost certainly still working — the WiFi dongle has lost its router connection. Common after BT, Sky or Virgin Media router restarts, broadband provider changes, or when the router assigns the dongle a new IP. We reconnect it remotely or walk you through the dongle reset.
Rapid clicking from the inverter, system fails to connect to the grid, generation stops. A known hardware fault on some GivEnergy units — the internal relay has failed and needs physical repair or inverter replacement. This is one of the few faults that needs an on-site visit, and with Newport just down the M4 from our Cardiff base we can usually get there next-day. We handle the full warranty claim process and the on-site swap where needed.

GivEnergy not saving you money? It's probably the settings
A correctly configured GivEnergy system on a good time-of-use tariff should be cutting a meaningful chunk off a typical Newport household's bills. If yours isn't anywhere near what you expected, the charge schedule, eco mode, export limit, or tariff integration is almost certainly wrong. We audit the entire configuration and optimise it for your specific tariff and usage pattern — remotely, the same day, in a single session.
Your GivEnergy installer in Newport isn't answering — we take over
Newport saw a wave of GivEnergy installations during the battery boom — from national chains and South Wales firms alike. Many have since scaled back, stopped doing aftercare, or closed entirely; the nearby Port Talbot installer Solar Plants, for instance, was dissolved back in 2022, leaving customers across the region without an aftercare route. Whatever the situation, the GivEnergy 12-year warranty is with the manufacturer, not the installer — and as an independent a short hop down the M4 from Cardiff we handle the full transition.
Move the GivEnergy system from the installer's portal account to your own homeowner account. Full data history preserved. Monitoring setup guide →
Check every setting — charge schedule, eco mode, export limit, CT clamp direction — and optimise for your current tariff and usage. Many installer-commissioned and Welsh-scheme systems were left on defaults.
Confirm your GivEnergy warranty status and the routes still open after the manufacturer's administration. If you have a covered fault, we handle the claim — and if hardware needs replacing, we carry out the on-site swap from our Cardiff base, with Newport just down the M4. GivEnergy warranty details →
