GivEnergy Repairs & Support in Rotherham

Rotherham's GivEnergy systems fall into two distinct groups: batteries retrofitted onto council-scheme solar from the Mark Group era, and new-build hybrid installs on the borough's newer estates. Both need support — the retrofits for wiring faults the original installers left behind, the new-builds for configuration that was never done properly. We're 15 minutes away and cover the whole borough.

Very very helpfuland so quick. Made sure that a non expert like myself understood what the problem was and how to resolve it.

Contacted Solar Tech about my Givenergy battery storage system that wasn't working. Battery status was "idle". Given the company Givenergy had gone bust, I need independent quality technical help. Very patient and clearly very knowledgeable about battery systems Ron diagnosed possible issues and suggested several possible remedies. Worked our way through them and fortunately it began to work. The fault was very specific and only an experienced engineer would have thought to check. Suffice to say I'll be back if I need independent support again. Lastly you only pay if there is a solution. Outstanding.

Mr P · Jun 2026

My Givenergy battery stopped working nearly a month ago. After unsuccessfully reaching out to my installer, who looks like he's also busted, I found Solar Tech Support on a Google search. They fixed my issue in a couple of hours. Any frustrated Givenergy customers, I highly recommend these guys.

Sarma Amirapu · May 2026

Excellent service from Solar Tech Support. Extremely quick to respond, easy to deal with and clearly very talented engineers. They were persistent throughout a complex GivEnergy battery issue and resolved everything completely. Highly knowledgeable, professional and reassuring support from start to finish. Highly recommended.

Ron responded very promptly regarding my GivEnergy battery issue, his knowledgeable diagnosis was spot on and resolved the issue on first attempt. Would recommend to any and all.

Simon Hill · May 2026

Ron made more sense in 20 mins than our installer has done over the last 12 months There is a jungle out there and you need someone like Ron to give a comprehensive overview and solution

I have a GivEnergy system consisting of two batteries, two inverters and a controlling EMS (Energy Management System) which has not worked since Nov 2025. After six months I discovered Solar Tech Support, reached out to them and Ron phoned me back – how often do you get that service? Could not be more helpful – worked directly with me over the phone, outside what I would call normal working hours. Lucid explanations and we were able to discuss the issues and history using camera and email history. As this was a very rare setup, Ron was able to access an EMS expert in the field to confirm the solution. One sunny day in, I am now only paying for standing charge and a few pence for spikes in grid consumption while battery catches up with house demand.

Ian · May 2026

When my GivEnergy system had an issue, I was completely left without support and had honestly lost all hope. Thankfully, I searched online and found Ron, which completely turned things around. After sending him a message, he responded incredibly fast and called me to assure me that he would get the problem fixed. I really admire his dedicated, supportive nature and his determination to find a solution. With this kind of outstanding attitude and customer service, he has absolutely secured a future customer in me.

He was very thorough in what he did Very knowledgeable I would highly recommend Ron and his company He did a fantastic job for me. if you have any problems, he'll do his best to help you out and resolve your problem. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them

Dennis Brown · May 2026

Ron took me through a diagnostic to confirm my GivEnergy Inverter had a fault. A common one as it turns out with the AC Inverter. As GivEnergy is defunct there is no immediate fix, aside from sourcing 2nd hand replacement. It may be that a fix becomes available over the summer which would make a lot of GivEnergy customers happy (Again)

Tony Deacon · May 2026

Contacted Ron with a problem and he sorted it out quickly with no problems at all. Very knowledgeable on anything solar/ batteries. I would recommend him to anyone

I've spoken to Ron a couple of times with issues with my Givenergy installation. Such a friendly knowledge guy very highly recommended. Thank you very much for resolving my issues

michael fairhurst · May 2026

Contacted Solar Tech Support in desperation. After explaining the issues I had with my system a diagnosis was made and a solution proposed. Fantastic service, even contacted a manufacturer to arrange replacement parts for me. Great communications, explained all they were doing and what I had to do, clearly and precisly. Followed up to confirm all was ok. Excellent service.

After GivEnergy went into liquidation, just my luck, my battery started playing up (internal board crashed). Contacted my installer - not interested! Found Solar tech support on a Google search. Sooo glad I found this company! Ron is extremely helpful and has plenty of experience. He soon confirmed what the fault was, and helped me to get my system up and running again. Now moved my GivEnergy account to Solar tech support, and will definitely use again if I have more issues. Unusual to find such a helpful company in these times, no morons reading scripts, just direct contact with the engineer.

Keith Ballard · Apr 2026

Contacted Solar Tech Support when trying to understand what my Givenergy inverter problem might be and what might be my options. Received good/honest advise which backed up my thoughts.

Hugh Speirs · Apr 2026

Ron is a super star. Two months ago my GivEnergy battery failed a firmware upgrade leaving it a brick. My installer couldn't/wouldn't fix it. GivEnergy couldn't/wouldn't fix it. Then they went into administration and all hope was lost. A flurry of emails later and Ron had diagnosed the fault (failed USB flash drive, something I'd suspected) and talked me through resolving it. Two months of nothing resolved in about 3 hours. It's great to work with someone who pays attention to the details, knows that they're doing (not just following a script) and gets stuff sorted without a fuss or up-charging.

Christopher · Apr 2026

I can add to the list of customers who had already 'given up' on GivEnergy due to their appalling customer service, and that was before they went into administration. So you can imagine my desperation when, having changed my ISP and my Inverter, predictably, proving to be the only device that didn't connect automatically to my new network, I found zero prospect of any customer support with GivEnergy having called in the administrators just five days earlier! The salvation came from Solar Tech Support. My IT advisor stumbled across their web site and some very helpful tips for beleaguered GivEnergy customers, as well as an offer to provide direct assistance. Nothing ventured, I decided to drop them an E-Mail, with very low expectations based on my experience of GivEnergy customer support. Within an hour Ron had responded with some pin point advice, and after a few exchanges of E-Mails he had nailed the problem, enabling the combined efforts of my IT advisor and solar installer to resolve it and reconnect my Inverter. Thank you Solar Tech Support, and Ron in particular, for coming to the aid of a deserted and despondent GivEnergy customer. Expert, razor sharp advice and first class customer service, even though I wasn't officially a customer.

This company are a rare gem, I had a very unusual problem following a failed firmware upgrade on my GivEnergy kit. I then found out GivEnergy were in administration and had dismissed all their support staff! None of the usual fixes to try and restore my inverter comms would work, and I looked everywhere, forums, GivEnergy youtube support videos - even AI couldn't figure it out. My installer was talking about huge sums for system replacements, and being vague / evasive about if they'd even install replacement GivEnergy inverter. Enter Solar Tech Support, reassuring and knowledgeable from the very start, I've learnt loads about my solar system though the friendly chat while my engineer worked as he diagnosed the problem and figured out a fix procedure that I've not found anywhere else - amazing. If you need solar system repairs - especially if you like me have been left high and dry by GivEnergy, I cannot recommend this company enough. Give them a call.

Rotherham context

Two waves of GivEnergy in Rotherham — and two different sets of problems

Rotherham's GivEnergy landscape splits cleanly. On one side: council-estate properties in Rawmarsh, Kimberworth, Brinsworth, and East Herringthorpe where GivEnergy batteries have been retrofitted onto decade-old social-housing solar systems. These retrofits were done fast, onto ageing electrical infrastructure, and the wiring between old and new is where faults live. On the other: newer private estates in Wickersley, Bramley, and Whiston where GivEnergy hybrid inverters were installed as part of the original build — properly wired, but left on default settings that don't match the homeowner's tariff or usage.

Council-scheme retrofit: old wiring, new battery

Mark Group installed thousands of solar systems across Rotherham's council housing estates before closing in 2015. These properties have since had GivEnergy batteries added by second installers working to tight schedules. The original consumer units were designed for a simple 2–3kW solar feed — not a battery system cycling charge and discharge through multiple circuits. MCBs are undersized, communication cables are Cat5 instead of Belden-grade, and meter connections use thin single-core cable that cracks at the terminals.

New-build estates: right hardware, wrong settings

GivEnergy Gen 3 hybrid inverters and All-in-One units are now standard on new-build estates across the Rotherham borough. The wiring is clean — done as part of the house build — but the systems are handed over with factory default configuration. Charge schedules don't account for the homeowner's tariff, eco mode is often disabled, and export limits may not match the DNO approval. The battery sits full all day while the house imports from the grid.

Social housing and tenant handover gaps

On council-owned or housing-association properties with GivEnergy retrofits, tenant changes create a support gap. The new tenant inherits a battery system with no documentation, no portal access, and no idea who installed it. The monitoring account is often still registered to the housing association or the previous tenant. We transfer the system to the correct account and configure it for the new household's usage pattern.

Inverter upgrade pathway

Many Rotherham homeowners replacing failed Solis or Growatt inverters on their FiT-era systems are choosing to upgrade to a GivEnergy hybrid inverter and add a battery at the same time. This is a full system conversion — removing the old string inverter, installing a GivEnergy hybrid, adding battery storage, and reconfiguring the entire system. We handle the full upgrade including DNO notification and FiT meter update.

Common faults

GivEnergy faults across Rotherham — retrofit wiring and new-build configuration

Rotherham's retrofit GivEnergy systems produce hardware faults from poor wiring. The new-build systems produce software faults from poor configuration. We fix both — remotely where possible, on-site when the cables need replacing.

1
BMS Communication Fail

The GivEnergy inverter displays "BMS Communication Fail" and stops all battery activity. On Rotherham's council-scheme retrofits, this fault is overwhelmingly caused by the communication cable between inverter and battery. The cable should be Belden-grade shielded cable — purpose-made for data communication in electrical environments. Most Rotherham installs used standard Cat5 ethernet cable instead. Cat5 has thinner cores that crack where the screw terminal bites down, and no shielding against the electrical noise from adjacent power circuits in a loaded consumer unit. The fault starts as intermittent dropouts and progresses to permanent failure. The only lasting fix is a full cable replacement with Belden and proper ferrule terminations at both ends.

2
Meter communication failure

The GivEnergy system loses its connection to the electricity meter — import and export readings disappear from the portal, and any tariff-based scheduling stops working because the system can't track grid flow. On Rotherham's 1960s–1980s semis, the electricity meter is typically in a hallway cupboard or external box while the GivEnergy hardware is in the kitchen or garage. The meter communication cable runs between them, and installers used thin single-core wire that cracks at the screw terminal over time. Thermal cycling from the consumer unit and physical movement from door vibration accelerate the failure. We re-cable with heavier-gauge wire and ferrule-terminate both ends.

3
GivEnergy battery MCB tripping

The MCB on the GivEnergy battery circuit trips — cutting power to the battery and stopping all charge and discharge activity. On Rotherham's Gen 1 retrofit systems, the root cause is an MCB that was never re-rated when the battery was added to the existing solar circuit. The original consumer unit had MCBs sized for a 2–3kW solar array. Adding a GivEnergy battery that charges and discharges at 2.6kW or 3.6kW pushes the circuit beyond the original MCB's rating during peak load. We upgrade the MCB to the correct amperage for the combined load and inspect every connection in the battery circuit.

4
GivEnergy battery red status light

A red light on the battery housing signals a state-of-charge error — the battery management system's internal reading no longer matches the actual cell voltage. On Rotherham systems, the most common trigger is a prolonged period at minimum SOC where the charge schedule isn't bringing the battery back up. This happens on retrofit systems where the installer configured a grid-charge window that doesn't align with the homeowner's tariff cheap-rate hours — the battery drains overnight, sits empty all morning, and the SOC counter drifts. A remote recalibration and schedule correction resolves it without a visit in most cases.

5
GivEnergy WiFi offline

Portal and app show the system as offline — no live data, no remote control. The battery and inverter are still running. The WiFi dongle has lost its router connection, which on Rotherham housing-estate properties is often because the router was changed by the broadband provider (common with TalkTalk and BT contract renewals) and the dongle wasn't reconnected. On social-housing properties where the tenant has changed, the new broadband setup breaks the existing WiFi link entirely. We reconnect remotely or guide the new household through the dongle pairing process.

Configuration

Moved into a new-build with GivEnergy? The settings need changing

New-build GivEnergy systems across Wickersley, Bramley, and Whiston are handed over with factory defaults — the house builder commissions the hardware but nobody configures it for the homeowner's energy tariff, usage pattern, or export arrangements. If your battery charges overnight on a flat-rate tariff, or sits full while you import from the grid during peak hours, the settings haven't been touched since handover. We audit the full configuration remotely and optimise every setting in a single session.

Charge schedule — matched to your tariff's cheap-rate window
Eco mode — enabled and configured for self-consumption
Export limit — corrected for your DNO approval
CT clamp direction — verified correct for your meter position
Council-scheme systems

Council-scheme solar with a GivEnergy battery bolted on — we untangle the whole thing

Rotherham's council-estate solar systems were installed by companies that no longer exist — predominantly Mark Group. When homeowners or housing associations added GivEnergy batteries through a second installer, the result was a layered system where nobody takes responsibility for the whole setup. The solar company is gone, the battery installer may have moved on, and the wiring between old and new is where most faults originate. We audit, fix, and maintain the combined system as one — regardless of who installed each part.

01
Combined system inspection

Inspect the original Mark Group solar wiring and the GivEnergy retrofit as a single system. Check cable grades — replace Cat5 with Belden where needed. Verify MCB ratings for the combined solar-plus-battery load. Test meter communication cable integrity. Health check details →

02
Configuration for the actual system

Set the charge schedule, eco mode, and export limit based on what the original 2–3kW array actually generates — not what the MCS certificate claims. Rotherham's council-scheme panels are 10+ years old and generating below original ratings, so the GivEnergy configuration needs to reflect current output.

03
Account transfer and warranty

Move the GivEnergy system to the homeowner's own portal account — especially important on ex-council properties where the monitoring may still be under the housing association. Verify the 12-year warranty with GivEnergy directly. GivEnergy warranty details →

FAQ

GivEnergy support in Rotherham — common questions

Free remote diagnostics handle the majority of GivEnergy software faults — pay only if we fix — charge schedule issues, eco mode problems, portal offline, firmware errors, and red status lights caused by SOC drift. On-site repair starts from £245 for physical faults including MCB tripping, BMS communication cable failures, and meter wiring issues. Inverter replacement is £795 including the new unit, installation, and commissioning. Rotherham is 15 minutes from our base — one of our fastest response areas with no travel surcharge. Full pricing →
Rotherham has thousands of council-scheme solar installations from the Mark Group era, and many have since had GivEnergy batteries retrofitted. The problem is that these batteries were added to ageing electrical infrastructure — consumer units designed for a simple 2kW array, not a solar-plus-battery system. MCBs trip because they were never re-rated. BMS communication cables fail because Cat5 was used instead of Belden shielded cable. Meter connections drop because thin cable cracks in screw terminals. We fix all three — usually in a single on-site visit.
Yes. Newer estates in Wickersley, Bramley, and Whiston are being built with GivEnergy hybrid inverters and batteries as standard. These systems are properly wired — the faults are configuration-based. Charge schedules left on defaults, eco mode not enabled, export limits set incorrectly, and tariff settings that don't match the homeowner's deal. A remote configuration audit at £75 resolves all of these in a single session.
BMS Communication Fail means the GivEnergy inverter has lost its data connection to the battery. On Rotherham retrofit systems, this is almost always a physical cable fault. The communication cable should be Belden-grade shielded cable, but many installations used standard Cat5 ethernet cable. The thin Cat5 cores crack inside screw terminals over months of thermal cycling and vibration from adjacent circuits in the consumer unit. The connection becomes intermittent before failing completely. The fix is replacing the Cat5 with proper shielded cable and re-terminating both ends — an on-site job from £245.
