Overview
What is the Gen 3 Hybrid?

DC-coupled hybrid inverter with built-in MPPT

The GivEnergy Gen 3 Hybrid is a DC-coupled inverter that connects your solar panels directly to its MPPT inputs — no intermediate AC inverter needed. Energy flows through a single conversion path from panels to home, delivering higher efficiency and faster response than AC-coupled alternatives.

DC-coupling advantage

Panels connect directly to inverter MPPT inputs. Energy flows through a single conversion: DC (panels) → inverter → AC (home/grid/battery). No intermediate AC inverter means lower losses and faster system response.

Direct MPPT control of panel voltage
Higher efficiency — single conversion path
Ideal for new builds and roof rewires

MPPT technology

MPPT continuously monitors panel voltage and adjusts the inverter's input to extract maximum available power at all times — particularly valuable in overcast or partially shaded conditions.

Up to 30% more power in poor weather
Flexible string configuration options
Lower voltage ripple — extended panel lifespan

Features & capabilities

Three-phase supply support — unique in the Gen 3 range
Dual-string per MPPT — 4 total independently managed strings
96% battery efficiency — premium performance
AFCI arc fault detection included
12,000W PV capacity — supports 28–35+ panels

The 8.0 kW is the flagship Gen 3 model, designed for larger homes and three-phase properties. With 12,000W max PV input it handles arrays of 28–35+ panels. Dual-string MPPT capability (2 strings per tracker = 4 strings total) gives unmatched flexibility for complex roof layouts — panels on different orientations or with mixed shading can each be optimised independently.

Dual-string MPPT explained

Each MPPT tracker on the 8.0 kW can manage 2 strings of panels independently. This means 4 independently-optimised strings in total — a significant advantage on complex roofs:

1
Multiple orientations

East, south, and west-facing panels each get their own MPPT optimisation — morning and afternoon harvest both maximised.

2
Partial shading tolerance

A shaded string on one part of the roof doesn't drag down output from unshaded strings — each manages itself.

3
Large array support

12 kW PV input with 4 strings covers the largest residential solar arrays without compromising efficiency.

Three-phase ready

The only Gen 3 model that supports three-phase supply — essential for many larger UK properties.

96% efficiency

Premium battery efficiency — 2% higher than 3.6kW and 5.0kW models, meaningful on a large system.

Pair with up to 5× GivBat 9.5 for 47.5 kWh total storage — whole-home energy independence.

Battery compatibility & pairing
Battery pairing

GivBat battery pairing guide

All Gen 3 Hybrid models require an external GivBat battery. This modular approach lets you start with less storage and expand later without replacing the inverter.

Why external battery?

The Gen 3 inverter handles all charging and discharging control; the GivBat module provides the physical energy storage. Separating inverter from battery gives you flexibility: if your energy needs grow, add another GivBat unit without touching the inverter or panel wiring.

This modular design also means a battery fault can be resolved by replacing only the affected GivBat unit, not the entire system.

Recommended GivBat models

FAQs

GivEnergy Gen 3 Hybrid questions

Gen 3 Hybrid is the current generation with improved efficiency (94–96%), higher PV input ratings, and full Grid Services capability. Gen 1 and Gen 2 are older models with lower efficiency and more limited features. Gen 3 is the correct choice for any new installation — it supports current G98/G99 grid connection standards and is compatible with all future UK grid services schemes.

Yes. All Gen 3 Hybrid models require an external GivBat battery, sold separately. The inverter handles all charge and discharge control; the GivBat module provides physical energy storage. The recommended pairing is GivBat 9.5 Gen3 (9.5 kWh). You can stack up to 5 GivBat units (max 47.5 kWh). This modular design means you can upgrade storage without replacing the inverter.

The Gen 3 3.6kW has a maximum PV input of 7,500W across 2 MPPT trackers. As a guide, 18–22 panels of 350–400W each fits comfortably within this limit. The exact number depends on your roof layout, panel specifications, and string configuration. Always consult a qualified MCS installer to design the optimal array for your property — array design must comply with BS:7909 and relevant IEC standards.

Yes — the Gen 3 8.0kW is the only model in the range capable of operating on three-phase supply, making it the correct choice for larger homes and properties with a three-phase electrical connection. The 3.6kW and 5.0kW are single-phase only. Grid connection on any supply type requires G98/G99 DNO approval and a registered MCS installer.

All Gen 3 Hybrid models switch to EPS (Emergency Power Supply) within milliseconds of detecting a grid outage (typically sub-20ms). This is fast enough to maintain most essential loads without interruption. EPS operates only on a designated essential load circuit — your installer must wire critical loads (lights, refrigerator, router) to this circuit at installation time. Circuits not on the EPS line will lose power during an outage.

In most cases yes — Gen 3 models have similar or higher PV input ratings than Gen 2, so the existing panel wiring can often be reused. However, G98/G99 compliance, DNO approval, and your installer's full site assessment must be confirmed before any upgrade. Upgrades typically require re-commissioning and sign-off from a registered installer. Always consult with a qualified solar engineer before planning a system upgrade.
