EPS & Battery Backup Installation in Manchester
Eastern Greater Manchester has one of the highest concentrations of battery storage in the North — but a significant number of those installations were completed without EPS wiring. If your battery charges and discharges normally but does nothing during a power cut, we can fix that. On-site EPS installation across Oldham, Rochdale, Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside, Stockport, and the Pennine fringe.
Tell us your inverter brand and what you need protected during a power cut. We'll confirm your inverter supports EPS and recommend the right configuration for your property.

Eastern Greater Manchester saw heavy battery installation activity over the past three years — driven partly by government energy efficiency programmes and partly by high electricity prices pushing homeowners toward self-consumption. GivEnergy and Growatt are the dominant brands in this area. But a pattern we see repeatedly across Oldham, Tameside, and Stockport is batteries installed without EPS being wired up. The installer fitted the battery, configured it for daily charge/discharge, and left — without adding the circuit work that would let the battery power your home when the grid goes down.

Typical installation time for a dedicated EPS circuit
The installation itself is usually straightforward — if your hybrid inverter supports EPS mode (and most do), we install the wiring from the inverter's EPS terminals to a new sub-board, add the neutral-earth bond, configure the inverter, and load-test everything on site. Half a day's work in most cases. Full guide to the 4 EPS configuration types →
EPS in terraced houses — working with compact consumer units
A high proportion of battery systems in eastern Manchester sit inside terraced houses — properties that were heavily targeted by ECO and Green Deal programmes. These homes typically have compact consumer units tucked under the stairs or in a small cupboard, often with no spare ways and limited mounting space.
Rather than trying to squeeze additional breakers into a full consumer unit, we mount a separate EPS sub-board alongside it. This draws from the inverter's EPS output terminals and feeds whichever circuits you want protected — lights, fridge-freezer, boiler, broadband. Clean separation, no need to alter the existing board.
Under-stairs cupboards and narrow hallways are common in Oldham and Ashton-under-Lyne terraces. We use mini trunking and surface-mount routing to keep the EPS wiring tidy without needing to chase into plaster. The sub-board mounts directly beside the existing consumer unit — compact, accessible, and clearly labelled.
If your property had a battery installed through a government programme but the installer didn't wire up EPS, adding a dedicated circuit is often the most practical upgrade you can make. The battery hardware is already there — it just needs the wiring to use it as backup power. Adding a battery to your Manchester solar system →
Four EPS configurations available in Manchester
Which option suits your property depends on what you want protected and how much of the house needs backup power. All four are available across our eastern Manchester coverage area.
A single 13A socket wired directly from the inverter's EPS terminals. Enough for a router, phone charger, or lamp. The quickest option to install — often under two hours.
A separate sub-board protecting the circuits that matter — fridge-freezer, boiler, lights, broadband. Covers the essentials without the cost or complexity of switching the entire house. The most popular choice in Manchester terraces.
A rotary isolator switch that lets you manually transfer your whole consumer unit to battery power. Full-house coverage — you just need to physically flip the switch when the grid drops.
An automatic transfer switch detects grid failure and switches your entire board to battery power within milliseconds. No manual intervention — the premium choice for properties where nobody may be home when the grid fails.

Power resilience on the Pennine edge
The eastern fringe of Greater Manchester — Stalybridge, Mossley, Glossop, Saddleworth, and the upper Tameside valleys — sits at higher elevations along the Pennine edge. These areas rely on overhead power lines that are more exposed to high winds, driven rain, and winter ice. Grid outages here tend to be more frequent and longer-lasting than in urban Manchester.
Properties served by overhead distribution lines are the most vulnerable to storm-related outages. A 10 kWh battery with EPS provides 18–20 hours of backup at typical household loads — enough to cover most weather-related outages with margin to spare. For properties running oil or LPG heating, keeping the boiler circuit on EPS means you don't lose heating during extended winter outages.
In Glossop, Saddleworth, and upper Mossley, where outages can run longer, a full-house automatic changeover switch is worth considering over a dedicated circuit. It protects the entire property without any manual intervention — particularly valuable if the house is unoccupied during the day or used as a holiday let.
If you already have battery storage at a Pennine fringe property but no EPS wiring, adding a dedicated circuit or changeover switch turns an existing investment into genuine power resilience. Full Manchester coverage details →
Inverter brands we configure for EPS in Manchester
EPS needs a hybrid inverter with battery storage. These are the brands we see most across eastern Greater Manchester — all support EPS mode when properly wired and configured.
AIO and hybrid range. The most installed battery brand across eastern Manchester. EPS supported on all hybrid models — typically needs wiring and enabling through the GivEnergy portal or app.
SPH and SPA series. Common on government-scheme battery retrofits in Oldham and Tameside. EPS configuration through System Parameters → Off-grid Settings on the inverter display.
Hybrid range. Growing presence in newer Manchester installs. EPS via Advanced Settings → Off-Grid/EPS in the inverter menu. Reliable backup performance.
Hybrid G4 range. EPS enabled via Settings → EPS Mode. Supports both dedicated circuit and full-house changeover configurations.
H1 and H3 series. Appearing on newer Manchester installs. EPS supported with appropriate wiring and neutral-earth bond.
Lux Power, Alpha ESS, Sigenergy, and more. If your hybrid inverter isn't listed, get in touch and we'll confirm whether it supports EPS.
Standard string inverters (SMA Sunny Boy, Fronius non-hybrid, SolarEdge single-phase) do not support EPS. If you have a string inverter and want backup power, you'd need an inverter replacement to a hybrid model first.
Battery has EPS enabled but trips or fails during outages?
This is the single most common EPS fault we encounter across Manchester. The inverter has EPS mode turned on, the battery is charged, but when the grid actually fails — either nothing happens or the protected circuits immediately trip. Nine times out of ten, the cause is a missing neutral-earth bond on the EPS output. Without it, RCDs lose their earth reference and trip the moment the inverter tries to power the circuit as an island supply.

Yes, provided the battery uses a hybrid inverter that supports EPS mode. Many government-funded battery installations across eastern Manchester were completed without EPS wiring — the scheme covered the battery and inverter but not the additional circuit work needed for backup power. If your hybrid inverter supports EPS (most GivEnergy, Sunsynk, and Growatt models do), we can add the dedicated circuit, neutral-earth bond, and configuration as a standalone job. Yes. Terraced properties across Oldham, Rochdale, and Ashton-under-Lyne often have compact consumer units with limited spare ways. A dedicated EPS sub-board mounts alongside the existing board and draws from the inverter's EPS output — it does not need space inside the original consumer unit. We size the sub-board to the circuits you want protected and route the wiring to keep the installation neat in a tight cupboard or under-stairs space. Book an EPS installation →
The Pennine fringe towns — Stalybridge, Mossley, Glossop, Saddleworth — sit at higher elevations with greater wind and storm exposure. Overhead power lines in these areas are more vulnerable to weather-related outages than underground urban supplies. If you already have battery storage, adding EPS means your system provides immediate backup when the grid drops — particularly valuable in locations where outages are more frequent and can last longer.
